Local Sea Cadets Win Navy League Awards
Presented by council Capt. Henry Stephenson, USN (Ret.)
Several Sea Cadets from the Battleship Missouri Division were recognized in December during a special awards ceremony luncheon. The Navy League Awards were presented by council Capt. Henry Stephenson, USN (Ret.) to two cadets in recognition of their outstanding dedication, leadership and commitment to the core values of honor, respect, commitment and service.
“Through consistent professionalism, teamwork and service to their unit and community, Sea Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Daniel Averbukh and Sea Cadet Recruit Christopher Milby have set a positive example to their peers and demonstrated the highest standards of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps,” Stephenson said. “Their performance reflects great credit upon themselves, their unit and the entire St. Louis community.”
Sea Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Daniel Averbukh was awarded the Navy League of the United States’ Youth Medal.
The mission of the Sea Cadets is to build leaders of character by instilling discipline, self-reliance, accountability, and patriotism in young people, with a focus on maritime skills and service, through a partnership with the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. They offer a structured environment where youth between the ages of 10 and 17 develop leadership abilities, learn about the sea services and gain confidence through hands-on training and challenging experiences.
The St. Louis-based division of Sea Cadets supports this mission with the recent addition of classes to the unit such as intelligence and radio communications, first aid, fire and rescue operations, culinary arts, and room clearing.
“We are always looking for new opportunities for our cadets to learn not only military skills but life skills in general,” said U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps Instructor Nicky Huddleston. “We are devoted to giving our unit an opportunity and memories they may never forget and hopefully guide them into a successful future.”
