Burkart Honored with National Award During Navy Ball

A cornerstone of the St. Louis Council since 1978, Burkart has served in nearly every leadership role.

The St. Louis 250 th Navy Birthday Ball was filled with many customs and traditions, like the piping aboard of six flag officers, the cutting of the cake by the oldest and youngest Sailors in the room, and thirteen ceremonial toasts.

Aside from being the oldest Sailor in attendance at 92, Melvin “Mel” Burkart was also called up “front and center” for a special recognition ceremony, where he was presented with the prestigious Scroll of Honor award.

A cornerstone of the St. Louis Council since 1978, Burkart has served in nearly every leadership role. His financial expertise, selfless dedication, and unwavering commitment to the sea services have strengthened our council, supported our Sea Cadets, and built lasting ties between the Navy League and our community.

“Mel’s leadership and generosity had a profound impact on me even as a young Sea Cadet,” said Tim Raines, former St. Louis council president and current president of the Navy League Midwest Region. “The Navy League’s financial support, guided by Mel’s stewardship, made it possible for me to participate in the international cadet exchange program in 1991 to Belgium, an experience that helped shape my path of lifelong service. His continued support of our local unit has ensured that generations of cadets have the same opportunities for growth, leadership, and connection to the sea services that he helped provide for me.”

The Navy League Scroll of Honor is an award given for outstanding contributions to the Navy League’s mission. It is the second-highest national award and the highest award at the regional, area, and council levels of the organization, and only three are awarded at the regional level each year.
