A New Year

President's Message

By Tom O’Brien

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne Chauncey, the outgoing President, for his guidance in leading the Council over the past two years.  Wayne is taking over the treasurer’s duties and will continue to be an integral member of the Board. Our Annual Membership Meeting and Awards of Excellence evening was held on 02 February.  A special congratulations goes out to the recipients of the Award of Excellence.  The awardees are nominated by their commanding officer for outstanding performance in the workplace and their contributions to the community.  This was the fifteenth year of the awards being presented.  The eight recipients represent TRANSCOM; Coast Guard, Sector Upper Mississippi River; the Navy Operational Support Center; and the Navy Recruiting District-St. Louis.  Thank you to Dick Kallemeier and his committee members: Mike Nolan, Jason Carter and Doyle Wilhite.  A big thank you also goes to Kathy Chauncey for coordinating the reservations for the evening, and to Mel Burkart for hosting the event at the Missouri Athletic Club West.  Thanks to LCDR Ken Nowack and the Color Guard from the Battleship Missouri Division Sea Cadet Unit for presenting the Colors.  Thank you to Lee Metcalf for presenting information to all assembled regarding the commissioning of the USS St. Louis,LCS-19.  The ship is scheduled to be commissioned in the Spring of 2020.  I am looking forward to an exciting 2019.  The Council will once again be hosting the Cardinal Company Baseball game, when the Cardinals play the Cincinnati Reds on 06 June at Busch Stadium.  The Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Westborough Country Club on 26 August, and the Navy Ball will be 19 October at the Missouri Athletic Club in Downtown St. Louis.

Wow, what a year!

Wow, what a year!

We were able to have as our guests this year, The Chief of Naval Operations, The Commander of Fleet Forces Command, the

Navy Element Commander from TRANSCOM, and the Chief of Navy Reserve. We welcomed the new Coast Guard Commander for the Region, and had several wonderful events for our membership, including our Navy Ball and Golf Tournament and hosting the Commanding Officer and some of the crew from the USS Harry S Truman. A special thanks to all the volunteers that helped make those events and this year’s other events a success. I was particularly pleased to be invited to present the Honor Sea and League Cadet of the Year awards to PO1 Tom Hepfer and LC3 Daniel Balai at the Annual Sea Cadet awards banquet. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and Membership of the Navy League, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Ken Nowack and Tom Gamboe for their dedicated leadership to the young men and women that make up our Battleship Missouri Sea Cadet Corps. Our annual Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club downtown on 27 Jan 2018. We are looking forward to a great turnout in 2018 to honor our awardees. I look forward to seeing you there and to the important work we have left to do in 2018, including our attention to the new USS St. Louis (LCS-19), the seventh ship to bear the St. Louis name, and the activities surrounding her construction and outfitting at Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin. And finally, I would like to thank Cristina Bergjans for all her work with the St. Louis Council as our treasurer. She will leave us at the end of 2017.

Thanks for everything Cristina!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all!

Happy Spring Navy Leaguers!

Gearing Up For Another Busy Season

I just attended the U.S. Navy League's Annual Sea, Air & Space Symposium and was fascinated by the advancements in military technology that's setting the pace for a strong national Security in the future. Let's continue to do our part in helping get the message out to our community about our support for the sea services and what they do everyday to ensure the open sea lanes of trade and communication.    I am looking forward to kicking off the Spring season with our annual Cardinal Recruit Company baseball game at Cardinal Stadium on June 7th.

Our participating companies of AB, Boeing, Stifel and now Price Waterhouse will donate their suites for our active duty navy families and servicemen along with our new members. Thanks to them for their participation this year.

Remember to get there early to watch the mass reenlistment by this year's guest officer, RADM Garvin, Head of Navy Recruiting in the District. He will also throw out the first pitch.

We will have our quarterly board meeting May 17th and then on August 9th as we gear up for the Summer Golf Tournament.

Once again we will have our outing at Norwood County Club on Aug 28th

Save the Date

Our Navy Maritime Ball will be held at Norwood County Club this year on October 13th, the Navy Birthday.

Spread the Word

Also remember to spread the word to our Schools and Universities to contact us for Scholarship information for the 2018 award year.
We will be launching our new website soon and look forward to feedback and ways to make our council more advanced in social and online media moving forward.
Thank you for your continued support,
Wayne Chauncey
