President’s Message

By Wayne Chauncey:

I am very honored to serve as the President of the St Lou-is Council of the U.S. Navy League for 2017. We have had a very busy quarter already hosting the Commander of Fleet Forces Command, Admiral Philip Davidson, at the Missouri Athletic Club downtown and preparing for the CNO, Ad-miral John Richardson’s, visit on the 14th of June. Many thanks to Lee Metcalf and Mel Burkhart for helping set up ADM Davidson’s visit. If you haven’t reserved your lunch seat yet for the CNO visit on the 14th of June, please see our website to do so or contact Dan Kloeppel, who has kindly volunteered to lead the CNO visit and luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel by the Airport.

The Navy Ball and Golf Tournament committees have been meeting regularly and we have made excellent progress. The golf tournament will be held on August 29th at Norwood Hills Country Club. This is a beautiful venue and despite the higher greens fees this year, we believe the tournament will draw a healthy crowd and be bolstered by our cor-porate sponsors. Many thanks to Rick and Jack Vogel for their efforts to make this year’s tournament a great success.

The Navy Ball will be held on 21 October at the Hilton-St.Louis Ballpark Hotel down-town. Our guest speaker has been con-firmed and is VADM Luke McCollum, Chief of Navy Reserve. Thanks to Bruce Greer for leading the charge on the Navy Ball.

Bob Eade was a terrific help in preparing and submitting the annual report again this year and the budget committee has set our financial goals. We are focused on improv-ing our position through controlled spend-ing and increased corporate giving.

Other key goals this year are increasing younger memberships, providing affordable membership events like ADM Davidson and the CNO’s visits over lunch and sorting through our electronic databases to ensure we reach the widest membership we can via electronic means. While we have been pub-lishing a Portside for as long as the Council has been around, it will be more cost effec-tive for us to transition to electronic deliv-ery for our members. I encourage those of you who do not have email to make the transition with us.

All in all, I could not be happier for the level of effort and volunteer spirit our board of directors brings to your council. I am extremely proud to be part of a great team.
